Legian
Legian, while just to the north of Kuta Central has really just evolved to become a part of the Kuta scene, although it does have it's unique characteristics, especially the further north you go. Read the Kuta page for a fuller description. At the other end of Legian is Seminyak.
Legian is a beachfront resort area, now with a paved walkway running the length of the beach. At first, we thought this would ruin Legian, but actually, it's improved and enhanced the area, given it greater accessibility and reduced the time it took to walk from Legian to Kuta. The walkway runs between the beach and what were previously beachfront hotels. It's a lovely place to walk, with virtually no hawkers, just the odd motorbike and great views and often a pleasant onshore breeze. It's also now easy to walk to Seminyak and the clubs and restaurants that it's renowned for.
Just past Hotel Jayakarta if you're walking north are about half a dozen beach-facing restaurants which all have great food, great views and great lazy-Sunday atmospheres. This is where the ex-pats hang out and they\'ve kept this place idyllic. Well, to me it is anyway.
In terms of distance, if you want to get to Tuban from Legian, it's walkable but a taxi is fast, inexpensive and often a nicer alternative in the heat of the day.
